Tabacon’s Naurally Heated Springs Draw International Attention.

The Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is no stranger to international acclaim. The recently renovated complex was awarded the highest possible 7-star rating for the quality of service and installations at its Grand Spa by the international organization Seven Stars and Stripes, the most prestigious recognition in the world for luxury hotels.

In addition to the spa’s rating, the hotel received six stars for its facilities and the Los Tucanes restaurant was given five stars, which also contributed to making Tabacon the first hotel in Latin America to obtain Seven Stars international distinction. Among the 200 other hotels that were chosen this year were top picks such as the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, the Adlon in Berlin, the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia and The Grand in Amsterdam.

The Tabacon Resort’s manager, Uwe Wagne, explained that Seven Stars is a well-recognized organization that holds great prestige throughout Asia and Europe. He hopes the distinction will attract tourists from these regions, which will not only benefit the hotel, but the entire region of Arenal and the country in general.

In addition to the Seven Stars distinction, the Tabacon Resort came in first place in the International Restaurant & Hotel Awards (IHRA) in the category of “property with Best Water Feature”. Manager Wagne will travel to Beverly Hills, CA this November 2008 to receive the award. The Costa Rica hotel beat out The Biltmore Hotel in Florida and the One & Only Ocean Club in Nassau Bahamas to come in first place.

The IRHA awards are divided into 11 categories at the luxury level. The Best Water Feature category acknowledges hotels with the best pools, beaches, mineral springs or Jacuzzis. Wagne noted that he is especially proud that the Tabacon hot springs are 100% natural thanks to their location at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, and the hotel itself is ecologically friendly.

To round out its list of honors, Tabacon’s Grand Spa was also selected as the “Favorite Spa in Central America” and one of the world’s “Top 10 Best Mineral Spring Water Spas” in 2007 in a poll printed by Luxury SpaFinder.

The spa itself is a treat for all who enter, although only their glowing faces and relaxing accounts will serve as proof, as photographs are not allowed inside. The facilities include 11 outdoor treatment bungalows for couples, individuals or families, each with a private Jacuzzi, a resort shaman, and a Yoga bungalow. Treatments are given in outdoor thermal river pools by spa specialists and overseen by the shaman.
